Marc Ouellette elected SOCAN Foundation president

Montreal-based composer Marc Ouellette has been elected president of SOCAN Foundation for the 2015-18 term. After receiving a composition degree from McGill University, Ouellette underwent further training in conducting with Hermann Max and in film music composition with Ennio Morricone.
Also a past winner in the SOCAN Foundation Awards for Young Composers, and a nominee in the ADISQ and Gemini Awards, Ouellette is active both in the concert music and popular worlds. Since his Hollywood debut as orchestrator, he has written original music for television movies, children’s television programming, and corporate and independent circus shows. As an arranger, producer and conductor, he has contributed to concerts and recordings featuring such diverse artists and groups as Céline Dion, Isabelle Boulay, Pierre Lapointe, Roch Voisine, The Tea Party and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.
He was a board member for the Société professionnelle des auteurs et des compositeurs du Québec (SPACQ, 1999-2012), including two years as president (2002-04). He also served for six years as board member of the Society for Reproduction Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers in Canada (SODRAC) and was its president in 2006. Since 2009, he has been a board member of the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) and SOCAN Foundation. He was recently re-elected to the board of the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (CSHF) for another three-year term. He is also teaching at l’Université du Québec (UQAM).
Toronto composer Victor Davies has been elected Vice-President of SOCAN Foundation for the 2015-18 term, while Vancouver-based publisher Craig Horton, of Nettwerk Music Publishing, has been named Secretary-Treasurer, and Montreal-based music publisher Jean-François Denis, of Ymx Média, assumes the newly created position of Past-President. The remaining SOCAN Foundation board members for the 2015-18 term are John Burge, Mario Chenart, Ajene “Agile” Griffith, Martine Groulx (La Meute Productions), Ed Henderson, Safwan Javed, Neville Quinlan (Peermusic Canada Inc.) and Earl Rosen (De Sade Songs).
