The Lori Davies Composition Award for Excellence in Dance, Opera or Music Theatre is presented annually to a mid-career composer who displays excellence in Dance, Opera or Music Theatre. It was established in memory of Lori Davies (1939-2021) by her family and friends. As the wife and business partner of composer and longtime SOCAN and SOCAN Foundation Board member, Victor Davies, Lori was deeply connected and integrated into the business of creating and producing music in Canada. Lori also had a real love of the musical genres identified in this Award and was a board member of Manitoba Opera. From 2001 to 2004, she served as Executive Director of the Guild of Canadian Film Composers, where her energies and vision enabled the organization to expand and broaden its mandate to become truly national in scope with the well-articulated goal of representing all AV music composers across Canada. Her legacy lives on in the now-named, Screen Composers Guild of Canada.

Applicants must submit an application through SOCAN Foundation’s application portal by the deadline.

Value

Award Recipient will be selected to receive a grant prize of up to $5,000.00.

Selection Process

Eligible applications must come from an individual composer and will be considered by a jury of prominent Canadian music creators and industry representatives selected by SOCAN Foundation. Excellence will be demonstrated by an evaluation of the application’s following three components:

– Past training and experience in the areas of music for dance, opera or music theatre as summarized in a curriculum vitae.

– The uploading of a score’s PDF and sending of a link to a recording/video of a dance, opera or music theatre work that has received a professional premiere performance within the last three calendar years prior to the competition’s deadline (in other words, the work must have been received its first professional performance on January 1st or later, commencing from three years before the current application year). While the submitted work can be in any compositional style or genre, the jury will be instructed to specifically assess the composer’s ability to shape their music to effectively capture narrative or dramatic storytelling.

– A thoughtful statement of no more than 750 words, that describes the composer’s mid-career profile and how the Award would be used to help advance the applicant’s career.
